Bamber Bridge 2 Bridlington Town 0
Northern Premier League 1st Division
at Irongate
Saturday 3rd March 2007

Bamber Bridge secured their second consecutive victory
over Yorkshire opposition with this comfortable 2-0 triumph
over East Riding strugglers Bridlington Town despite being
reduced to ten men for the last 15 minutes. Bridlington
played their part in an entertaining game but failed to
gain any reward after playing some neat but ineffective
football.
Brig were delighted just to be getting a game in. Indeed,
the South Ribble side have played just two competitive matches
since the end of January. They were keen to add three more
points to their slate following their victory over Wakefield
on the 17th February. Bottom-of-the-League Bridlington Town,
were hoping to double their tally in the games-won column
having won just once in the First Division this season.
Indeed, you have to go back to the 28th of August to find
their last league victory.
Phil Entwistle made five changes to his starting line-up
at Wakefield a fortnight before. Goalkeeper David Newnes
returned from suspension and full-back James Archer returned
from a long lay-off through injury. Archers return
saw Allan Fleming move to the centre of defence replacing
the injured Steve Williams. Jonathon Smith replaced the
suspended Mike Fletcher in midfield whilst Adam Tong made
his first full appearance in a Brig shirt. The Burscough
man was chosen to lead the line, being preferred to Neil
Spencer who took his place on the bench.
The visitors were the busier in the opening stages taking
the game to their hosts. Drew McCoubrey went close with
a rising shot from distance as Town went in search of an
early goal.
Despite showing plenty of creativity, Bridlingtons
early endeavours brought them no reward and their Lancashire
hosts showed them just how it should be done on 27 minutes
with a fine goal from out of the blue.
A sweeping move down the right involving Steven Brown and
Ryan Salmon was finished off in style by Brigs leading
marksman Alex Porter who scored his 18th goal of the season
with a comfortable header from close in.
Despite this set-back the visitors continued to push forward
at every given opportunity but all their endeavours petered
out in the last third. George Melling was proving to be
an unmoveable obstacle in the heart of the home defence
and was giving little away to the eager visiting raiders.
Brig too appeared a little out of sorts and struggled to
sustain any meaningful rhythm to their play. Despite this
apparent sluggishness, Bamber Bridge came out of the traps
early after the break and began to play with more vigour
but were unable to break through the resolute Town defence.
The visitors won a succession of corners as they fought
for equality with their Lancashire hosts but were completely
undone on 64 minutes when the South Ribble side went further
ahead with another quality strike.
Full back Jamie Nay set Salmon away down the right and
the young strikers perfect cross was confidently lashed
home by the inrushing Porter from the edge of the penalty-box
to secure the points for Bamber Bridge.
Shortly after this the home team almost got a third when
Town goalkeeper Mick Clark was brought into action denying
Salmon with a low save after the Brig man took a snap-shot
from the edge of the box.
James Nay was then dismissed on 73 minutes after a late
challenge on Town substitute Liam Berry, but the visitors
were unable to benefit from the advantage and Bamber Bridge
comfortably held out for the three points. Indeed, the homesters
played their best bit of football during this period.
