Bamber Bridge 0 Goole AFC 2

Northern Premier League 1st Division

at Irongate

Friday 6th April 2007

By Dave Rowland

Despite being reduced to ten men at half-time and surviving a penalty-kick in the 82nd minute when the score stood at 1-0, a determined and workmanlike Goole come away from Irongate with all three points with this deserving 2-0 victory.

It took the Yorkshiremen just five minutes to get their noses in front. Goole wingman Danny Buttle made a fine run down the left flank before delivering a pin-point cross onto the head of Steve Rollinson who made no mistake from close range.

This early set-back caught Bamber Bridge cold and they were made to play second fiddle for much of the first half as their guests went about their business playing some purposeful and inventive football. However, they were reduced to ten men at the interval when Duncan Bray was dismissed by referee Mr Oldham as the players left the field after the Goole man had punched Brig centre-half George Melling.

As was to be expected, the home side came out with all guns blazing after the break but they were unable to penetrate a resolute Goole back line ably marshalled by the experienced pair Lee Harper and Nigel Danby. Indeed, the visitors almost went further in front after 50 minutes when Brad Hill hit the crossbar following a cross from Andy Jackson.

However, the game looked like it was heading for a draw in the 82 minute when Bamber Bridge were awarded a penalty-kick when Danby was adjudged to have upended lively Brig midfielder Steve Brown well inside the box. Brig leading marksman Alex Porter was unable to get the better of Goole goalkeeper Chris Hill who saved the powerfully struck spot-kick.

Just to prove their overall superiority Goole increased their lead two minutes from time. James McDaid crossed from the right and Andy Parton cracked the ball home with confidence from the edge of the box to give Brig goalkeeper David Newnes no chance.

Bamber Bridge: Newnes, Beech, Myers (Farrow 56mins), Melling, Mahoney, Fletcher (Williams 56mins), Brown, Edmeads, (Marsden 56 mins), Porter, Barlow, Ince
