MATCH REPORT

Bamber Bridge 3 Warrington Town 3

Northern Premier League 1st Division North

at Irongate

Tuesday 19th August 2008

By Joe Marchant

Brig and Warrington fought out an entertaining draw at Irongate although the home side will feel aggrieved at failing to hold on to a two-goal lead.

Brig boss Phil Entwistle named an unchanged starting XI from the side 3-0 winners at FC Halifax Town last weekend. Visitors Warrington also won on the opening day – 1-0 at home to promoted Salford City. The Wire were placed in UniBond First Division South last season – much to general surprise.

The game swung from end to end in the opening stages. Phil Hadland sent a low ball in from the right for the Brig defence to boot clear and break upfield at pace. Neil Zarac’s low cross was cleared for a corner. A long punt upfield ended with a Brig defender’s fresh-air kick but Calvin Davies shot over.

Neil Spencer’s right-wing cross was fractionally too high for Zarac, whilst at the other end Hadland’s cross was headed over by Carl Rendell.

On the quarter-hour mark, Adam Tong’s long throw was flicked on by Zarac at the near post only for the ball to fall kindly for a Wire defender.

Brig went ahead after 18 minutes. Danny Mahoney swung a free-kick in from the right and Warrington keeper Richard Mottram safely collected it only to drop it at Glenn Steel’s feet. Steel sidefooted it to ADAM TONG who blasted it into the roof of the net from close range.

Mottram immediately redeemed himself after Alex Porter sped down the right, sent a long cross to the far post and Mike Mason arriving at speed bulleted a goalbound header that Mottram did well to grab at full stretch.

On 25 minutes a crossfield ball from Allan Fleming was skilfully chested down by Ryan-Zico Black on the right flank who quickly found Danny Mahoney and his lay off to Jamie Nay saw the full-back’s shot go straight through to Mottram.

Two minutes later Spencer fed it out to Zico on the right and his high cross to the far post was mishit by Spencer and Mottram cleared for a corner.

Brig netted their second on 29 minutes. Mason’s corner was met by a high leap from NEIL ZARAC who was then clattered as his header hit the net. After treatment the Brig striker was able to resume.

More excellent control by Zico and a quick ball in should have been converted by Zarac but the chance went begging. Wire charged up the other end and whilst Brig felt they deserved a free-kick after Zico was flattened in midfield in the buildup, Wire won a corner. From James Thomas’ corner on 34 minutes MATTY FARRELL headed in at the far post.

A Zico cross caused a mad scramble in the Wire box before Spencer blazed over.

Another glorious chance went begging on 42 minutes. Nay’s lovely floated ball sent Porter through 1-on-1 with Mottram but after the Brig striker broke through into the box, he sent a disappointing shot at the keeper’s legs.

Brig continued to create (and miss) chances after the break. Zarac headed a Mason cross over. Mahoney won two tackles in midfield before slotting a good ball through for Mason but Mottram just managed to reach the ball first. Mahoney then released Mason down the left who scuttled to the byeline and Mottram beat out the low cross at his near post. Zico’s corner was flicked wide by Steel at the far post.

Brig managed the elusive third goal on 57 minutes. Following a foul on Spencer, Mahoney’s free-kick was chested down by NEIL ZARAC who turned in an instant and buried his low shot giving Mottram no chance. An excellent strike.

Wire halved the deficit after 63 minutes with a goal out of nowhere when JAMES THOMAS’ 25-yarder flew past Andy Banks giving the Brig keeper no chance.

Another 1-on-1 was wasted by Brig, and then Nay’s 35-yarder went inches wide.

Intricate passing in midfield between Mahoney and Spencer released Porter down the left to the byeline but as the striker moved menacingly into the six-yard box, his low ball hot Mottram’s legs and fizzed across the face of the goal.

Wire equalised on 79 minutes when Brian Holmes dashed down the left and his low cross was turned in at the far post by fellow substitute BILLY WEBB.

Brig had a chance on 86 minutes but Tong’s close range header went at Mottram.

Wire were reduced to ten men in the 89th minute after Rendell was shown his second yellow card in quick succession.

The visitors finished strongly and there was a scare when Hadland nipped down the right and sent a dangerous ball in but Steel did well to clear for a corner.

Two points dropped by Brig and their frustration was summed up at the final whistle by Mason sinking to his knees and beating the turf.
