MATCH REPORT

Rossendale United 3 Bamber Bridge 4 (after extra-time)

Northern Premier League Presidents Cup 2nd Round

at Dark Lane

Tuesday 4th November 2008

By Joe Marchant

Brig earned a tie against Trafford at Irongate in the next round after a hard fought tussle at Dark Lane, as a 90th minute home equaliser sent the game into extra-time.

Assistant manager Neil Crowe made seven changes to the side victorious at Garforth last weekend as he shuffled the squad around. The four survivors from the weekend were Andy Banks, Dave McCann, Alex Porter and Mike Mason. There was a competitive debut for youngster Tom Merella whilst Stuart Howson returned from suspension. Included in the Stags’ ranks was former Brig midfield star John Turner.

Brig had a couple of efforts within the first two minutes as Mason shot straight at Stags keeper Lee Bracey, and then Porter from the left shot against the outside of the goal stanchion.

Rossendale immediately hit back as Ryan Dunnan sent Jermaine Steel into the box but he could only shoot at Banks.

Jamie Nay sent a great ball through only for Andy Watson to whip it away from Anthony Murt at the expense of a corner. Porter’s corner found Krystian Liptrot just outside the box whose first-time shot flew over.

On the quarter hour mark, Murt sent it wide to Merella whose cross rebounded off Bracey and after a scramble was cleared.

Good bit of skill by Murt who flicked it over a defender and out to Porter but the Brig skipper was off balance as he shot high over the bar.

Mark Edmeads’ shot from a Merella cross was blocked in the box and Nay created a chance for Ryan-Zico Black to turn quickly and shoot wide.

With half an hour played, Mason’s throw was held up by Murt who then set off on a run and his shot was defelected off Andy Watson for a corner.

Play became very scrappy until the Stags went ahead after 39 minutes. A ball came in from the right to JERMAINE STEEL whose initial shot hit the far post but fell kindly for him to turn in the rebound from close range.

Brig equalised right on half-time. Howson’s ball down the left flank saw Porter take it to the byeline and his cutback was rifled in by ANTHONY MURT from around six yards out.

No changes at the break as Rossendale began the stronger side and Mason made a timely interception to thwart home dangerman Zach Clark inside the box.

James Heywood put Clark away and he danced round a couple of Brig defenders before overhitting his cross.

On the hour a high Turner free-kick wasn’t properly cleared and Andy Watson’s close range shot was saved.

A minute later Clark was through again and although his first shot was fumbled, his second attempt brought a good save from Banks.

Following a foul on Porter, his free-kick was met by Howson’s free-header but there was no real power to trouble Bracey. The second-half was turning out to be a better spectacle than the first.

A miskicked Brig clearance went straight along the ground to Clark but fortunately McCann was on hand to clear.

Paul Derrick flashed a long-range shot wide.

Brig took the lead on 71 minutes. A Porter corner and McCann header was cleared only as far as ADAM TONG on the edge of the box on the right side and his well-struck shot fairly flew across goal and into the far corner of the net.

A dangerous Turner free-kick was then turned round by Banks for a corner.

Another Brig debutant, Shayne Oldfield played a nice ball in to Porter who eventually brought it under control for Bracey to turn his shot round for a corner.

With six minutes remaining, Tong’s header from a Porter corner was cleared off the line. A minute later a cross from the left went over Howson’s head and although Clark mishit his shot, Banks did well to reach it as he was anticipating a “normal” shot.

Into the final minute and agony for Brig as the Stags equalised. A ball down the left found KRIS ATKINSON who shot past the helpless Banks to take the game into extra-time.

Brig regained the lead on 94 minutes. Nay found Murt who laid it off for MIKE MASON to send a 25-yard drive flying past Bracey.

With 100 minutes played the ball was scrambled clear out of the Brig area after a defensive lapse.

Brig went further ahead after 103 minutes. Mason’s free-kick found GLENN STEEL and his shot took a deflection on its way into the net. Surely there was no way back for Rossendale now.

The home side clearly had different ideas and pulled a goal back on 112 minutes. A ball over the top left ANDY WATSON in the clear and he took it round Banks and netted from a tight angle.

With 40 seconds remaining, Atkinson’s shot was deflected for a corner, and from the flag kick, Derrick’s header sailed just the wrong side of the post.
