Bamber Bridge failed to score for the first time in twenty-one competitive games this season as they fell at the first hurdle in the Lancashire Trophy.
Brig boss Phil Entwistle shuffled his squad making six changes to the starting line-up at Newcastle last weekend. Rested were Collin McAllister and Glenn Steel, whilst Tom Ince, Adam Tong, Ryan-Zico Black and Anthony Murt all dropped to the bench. Replacing them were John Kennedy returning from injury, Jamie Nay, Dave McCann, Steve Brown, Mark Edmeads and Mike Mason. Stuart Howson captained the side in Steel’s absence.
Irongate was drench and dismal as the game kicked-off with a gusting wind and driving rain sweeping in from the clubhouse end.
Paul Woolcott had an early chance when he drifted in from the right, only to fire straight at former Marine keeper Andy Banks.
Brig almost went ahead after 8 minutes when Howson’s thunderous wind-assisted free-kick took a deflection off Mason and a further deflection off Adam Farley to sail over the Marine crossbar.
The Mariners had a promising move on 17 minutes when Wayne McDermott combined with Tim Bigland on the left and Woolcott narrowly failed to connect with the long cross. Brig surged up the other end and Neil Zarac had a good chance inside the box but could only poke his shot at Marine keeper Ben Barnes.
Brown played a great diagonal defence-splitting pass with the intention of setting Alex Porter free but Barnes was quick to spot the danger and raced out of his goal to prevent the Brig striker from getting a shot in.
Around the half hour mark and Marine were gradually getting a hold on the game. Peter Cumiskey cut in from the right forcing Banks to make a sharp save. The Brig keeper was called into action a minute later when Barnes’ long goal-kick sent Shaun Tuck clear only for Banks to produce a fine save.
Five minutes before the break, Zarac powered a header past the near post from Porter’s corner, and right on the interval, Barnes dropped Mason’s cross but quickly recovered to snatch it away from Zarac.
Neither side made any changes at the break as the rain returned, and it was Marine who took the lead on 47 minutes. PETER CUMISKEY’s shot rattled the crossbar, and after a bit of a stramash, the Marine striker was able to find the net second time around.
Brig made a double change replacing Steve Flitcroft and Zarac with Black and Murt. Within a minute of the switch, Porter’s drive was finger-tipped by Barnes over the bar.
Just after the hour, Edmeads found Mason on the left and his low cross ended with Porter’s shot being cleared by Farley for a corner.
Brig were having the better of the play by now although the visitors had a half chance when a corner was cleared to Kevin Lynch outside the box but his shot went harmlessly wide.
With twenty minutes remaining, Brig almost levelled when McCann’s header from a Porter corner was hacked clear.
Banks came to Brig’s rescue again when by bravely diving at Tuck’s feet after a Freddie Potter throw had sent the Marine striker scampering into the box.
Brig were denied again on 86 minutes when Howson’s header from a Brown corner was cleared off the line.
Marine were reduced to ten men a minute later when Joe Fowler collected his second yellow within the space of just four minutes.
With two minutes remaining, Banks made another brave swoop to whip the ball off Tuck’s boots.
With Brig going all out for an equaliser, a quick Marine break in the final minute saw TIM BIGLAND net a far post tap-in following a Tuck run and low ball across from the right.
Overall it was a battling display from Brig in horrendous conditions to give a good account of themselves against decent UniBond Premier Division opposition.
