MATCH REPORT

Wakefield 0 Bamber Bridge 1

Northern Premier League 1st Division North

at College Grove, Wakefield

Saturday 14th November 2009

By Lancashire Evening Post

Bamber Bridge secured their first league win in nearly two months thanks to a rare goal from Phil Robinson.

The defender bagged his first goal since returning for a second spell at Irongate in the summer when he pounced on a mistake by home goalkeeper Jan Zolna.

From then on, Brig had to dig deep to protect their slender advantage but, with keeper Mike Hale in commanding form, they were able to hang on, ending a run of five games without a win in the UniBond First Division North, dating back to September 19.

Manager Tony Greenwood said: "It wasn't a classic but any win away from home is pleasing.

"We are back on track now. After a good point at Fylde last week, we've now taken four points from two tough away games, which puts us back in the mix."

Wakefield were the first to threaten, but Jon Froggatt headed wastefully over after wriggling free inside the penalty area.

However, Brig then broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, thanks to a howler from the hapless Zolna.

The Wakefield keeper should have comfortably dealt with a corner but instead he spilled the ball straight to ROBINSON, who could barely believe his luck as he headed into an unguarded net from five yards.

Brig had further chances to extend their lead before the break, but Matthew Cross and Danny Mahoney failed to take full advantage.

At the opposite end, the visitors survived a scare when Chris Haworth cracked a shot against the post, having been cleverly teed-up by Danny South.

And Brig had to defend resolutely for long periods of the second half as Wakefield pressed for an equaliser.

Delroy Ferguson was only fractionally off-target with a long-range drive, Froggatt headed wide from a teasing Mark Wilson cross, and Marc Roberts struck a post with a venomous 20-yarder as Brig came under siege.
