MATCH REPORT

Clitheroe 3 Bamber Bridge 0

Northern Premier League 1st Division North

at Shawbridge, Clitheroe

Saturday 28th November 2009

By Lancashire Evening Post

Delighted Clitheroe boss Peter Smith has talked flying winger Zach Clark into staying at Shawbridge.

The jet-heeled 20-year-old said 'no' to a switch to Chorley and then turned in a super show to help 10-man Clitheroe crush play-off chasers Bamber Bridge 3-0.

Smith said: "Chorley offered to double Zach's money last week and I thought we'd lost him.

"But we had a chat and Zach said he didn't want to leave, he was enjoying himself too much.

"He's a cracking lad, and I said I'd get him an extra tenner.

"I'm so chuffed, it reflects the spirit, and fierce determination - everybody is playing for the badge at Clitheroe.

"The boys here are not on much, just expenses really, but I was so proud of their display to beat Brig. It was our best win for a couple of years."

Misers Brig had leaked just nine league goals this term, but Clitheroe's rookies - led by star man Danny Williams - left the visitors reeling.

Smith, who had a spell at Irongate, added: "We were getting a bit of stick at the start of the season as we had a quiet start, but we've won five out of six now and it looks good."

Brig boss Tony Greenwood was involved in a bust-up with Clitheroe's assistant boss Kenny Mayers at the final whistle.

Greenwood said: "It was a bit of banter, that's all. We sorted it out and had a pint afterwards.

"We were very poor and we couldn't match Clitheroe's commitment, endeavour and spirit. We didn't deserve anything.

"It didn't help losing two defenders in the first half-hour, but that's not an excuse."

The first half was so one-sided Brig didn't manage a shot on goal, while Liam McManus and leading scorer Nathan Taylor both went close for Clitheroe.

WILLIAMS broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, slotting home from 10 yards.

Brig rallied briefly, sub Chris Marlow having appeals for a penalty waved away, and Danny Mahoney's shot skimmed the bar.

But there was no way back for Brig when TAYLOR doubled Clitheroe's lead on the hour.

Not even the loss of full-back McManus, who saw red five minutes later, could halt Clitheroe as, ex-Chorley man Gavin-Lee ELLISON smashed home a third late on
